Guillotine Sharpens Product Placement

Filmmaking has long been a commercial industry and advertisers have been arranging for their products and brands to appear onscreen almost from the outset. Turner Classic Movies and producer Charlie Coates worked with Guillotine Post senior editor Michael Koepenick on a series examining the origins and development of these advertising tie-ins. Entitled Product Placement in the Movies, the series examines a part of film history that most people know very little about. Utilizing graphic highlights to point out specific products and brands onscreen, the series relies on longtime industry specialist George Simkowski to relay the unique practices of this highly specialized and effective advertising method. The series, featuring films ranging from The Seven Year Itch to Urban Cowboy, aired in March.

Also returning to Guillotine Post was Disney Channel, which enlisted the aid of editors Michael Koepenick and Christo Harris to edit a series of PSAs focusing on relief efforts for Asian tsunami victims. Directed by Glen Owen of Statewide Films, the PSAs feature Disney teen stars such as Raven of That's So Raven, and Alison Michalka of Phil of the Future discussing the importance of volunteering and relying on family. The spots are a continuation of Disney's "Express Yourself" campaign that Owen and Disney have posted at Guillotine over the last 4 years.
