PR Pros Showing the Ropes

The Georgia chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA|GA) hosted Real World PR 2005. PRSA|GA's annual collegiate conference at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Atlanta attracted nearly 200 students from more than 30 colleges and universities throughout the Southeast and well beyond. For the first time, 13 graduate students in communications registered. Also attending for the first time were 11 Communications Career Academy teachers from four high schools in suburban Atlanta. The Georgia chapter supports the Communications Career program with a mission to guide students to explore opportunities by providing knowledge, training and technology in the fields of public relations, broadcast journalism and graphic arts.

The conference included various career seminars focusing on topics such as how to make the most of an internship and how to find a job in public relations. Students also learned more about specific public relations functions to help them better determine which area of the profession is right for them. Additionally, the conference's University Avenue gave students opportunities to learn more about advanced business and communication programs at the region's top colleges and universities. Recruiters were on hand to answer questions about curriculum, admissions requirements and application procedures.

The Career Connections Expo also offered attendees seeking internships and jobs a chance to network with representatives of the region's top corporations, PR agencies and nonprofit organizations. BCBS of Georgia; Cingular Wireless; Cohesion Group; Cox Communications; Edelman; Emory Healthcare; GCI Group/Atlanta; GolinHarris; Jackson Spalding; Manning, Selvage & Lee/Atlanta; William Mills Agency; Philips Consumer Electronics; UPS; and many other companies and PR agencies realized the importance of helping students succeed, and were among the 25 major sponsors of the 2005 conference.
