LAB 601 Digital Post proudly announced the completion of its new Audio Suite and the addition of three new staff members.

The new audio suite boasts a Pro Tools | HD3 system supporting 128 simultaneous audio tracks. The suite includes client seating for five and a client workstation with phone and laptop. Clients will have access to the Server Sound digital music and sound effects library which will enable them to search through an internet browser in any of the LAB’s editing and finishing suites to select files for batch importing into their project. The Pro Tools | HD3 is compatible with the facility’s Avid Unity Media Net storage system, allowing clients to go from one of the LAB’s video suites to the audio suite and begin working without the downtime of outputting and redigitizing.

Andy Martin has joined the Lab’s creative team as Sound Designer and will manage and operate the new Audio Suite. Martin comes to LAB 601 from the San Francisco Bay area where he worked at Ear Circus with Oscar-winning Skywalker Sound veteran Randy Thom, and the internationally renowned division of Lucas Digital LTD. Martin is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The lab’s Editor, Michael Tew collaborated with UPS Senior Producer, Russ Ensley on a project commemorating the company’s 95th Anniversary. Entitled “UPS: A Lesson in Longevity,” the 5 minute video was at the company’s annual Management Conference. The project juxtaposed a montage of classic UPS archival footage with contemporary imagery. Tew created a 1:37 timeline of highly composited imagery on the LAB’s Avid|DS, using UPS archival footage from the early 30’s through the present. Eric Deren of Dzignlight Studios provided an animated mosaic of UPS employee photographs – both past and present – that zooms out to reveal the shape of the UPS shield. The video will be translated into multiple languages and shown to all 370,000 employees worldwide on August 28th, the date of UPS’s 95th anniversary.
