R!OT Atlanta

Christmas is a few months past (and a few more away), but let's remember the season for a second, with some new work from R!OT Atlanta.

Late 2003, the R!OT team designed and produced a colorful graphics package for HGTV for use in promoting its extensive holiday programming, drawing inspiration from an advent calendar. Deliverables included line-up cards, promos, opens, closes, back-plates, IDs, and lower thirds, all shown on the home channel from the start of the holiday season through its broadcast of the Rose Parade on New Year's Day.

Conceived by R!OT Atlanta creative Director Jeff Doud, the graphics featured snowflakes, dreidles, stars, and other holiday icons set over a white background. The executions also employed windows like those found on advent calendars that pop open to reveal live action imagery. "HGTV features more holiday programming than any other channel," explains Doud. "So we needed a look that would help them to take maximum advantage of that fact and one that was versatile and engaging enough to hold up to heavy use."

R!OT Atlanta compositors Gavin Holmes and C.E. Rahm executed Doud's design, including modeling and animating the eighteen holiday icons that recur throughout the package. Additionally, R!OT's Chris Basta composed the music that drives the package, and handled the sound design and final mix.
