Introducing the Georgia Production Partnership

By: Matthew Timmons

The Georgia Production Partnership (GPP) consists of companies and individuals concerned with strengthening and preserving the viability of motion picture, television and commercial production in the State of Georgia. In the monthly meetings, the GPP discusses issues and challenges that face our production community. The member’s active participation has aroused the awareness of our government leaders, labor organizations and businesses, of the need to maintain a fertile production environment in the State of Georgia.

Formerly known as the Atlanta Production Partnership, the GPP expanded beyond metro Atlanta to include film and television executives from across the state. Started as a grass roots organization in ‘97, the GPP now consists of a network of business owners, production and post production department heads, union business agents, producers, government representatives and music and internet industry professionals.

Technology has blurred the once definitive lines in our industry. Now, you will find tools of motion picture production being used for products destined for the internet. High definition television is certainly on its way, but has yet to reveal its total impact on our industry. Our goal in this ever evolving, highly competitive marketplace is to be the most aware and prepared players on the playing field. As a group, we share information, experiences, ideas and sometimes problems.

It has been a long standing goal of the GPP to get our government leaders to give credence to our half billion dollar industry. The GPP can proudly say, through its continued efforts, it has been successful in getting Governor Roy Barnes to recognize the economic and creative value of this highly skilled production industry in Georgia. In September of 1999, Governor Barnes established the Georgia Film & Videotape Advisory Commission, which has complemented the marketing efforts of the Georgia Film & Videotape Office. Entrepreneur and successful businessman, Michael Coles, serves as its chairman. This is the team, along with the Georgia Production Partnership, that has developed an industry-specific incentive legislative package that is currently traveling the halls of the State Capital. Through its recommendation, the Advisory Commission was able to get increased funding to the Georgia Film & Videotape Office expanding our ability to market the State of Georgia nationally and globally.

The real strength of the organization comes from the depth and participation of the membership. Membership gives you access to monthly meetings and participation in the GPP e-mail and fax network where members keep abreast of issues relating to our industry. The GPP has established annual memberships. If you are interested in participating in the Georgia Production Partnership or would like more information, e-mail: TheGPP@mindspring.com.
