Luxuriate at CineFilm
January of 2007 marked a new addition to the services of Atlanta-based CineFilm with the launch of their new Digital Intermediate Suite. The suite is a complement to the two existing film transfer suites that feature a Spirit 2K and Quadra with DaVinci color correction.

CineFilm is the first company in Atlanta to provide color correction in a theater setting with 4:4:4 digital projection on a screen. “Many companies are performing color correction using standard HiDef monitors,” explains Ron Anderson, Senior Colorist for CineFilm, “but the look of light reflected from a movie screen is different than RGB additive color from HiDef monitors. Projection viewing is the standard in Los Angeles and we wanted to give our clients that same quality.”

What makes the workflow at CineFilm unique among HD-DI processes is the media stays 10bit uncompressed digital all the way to a film out. Even HDCam SR 444 has 2.7:1 compression on tape, the film transfers to drive will never see tape compression anywhere in the process. Says CineFilm account manager Joe Huggins, “With projection grading in 4:4:4 HiDef with true color specialist, there’s no compromise on your image.”

CineFilm will also provide sample tests of select scenes to 35mm film out and project those in the film screening room adjacent to the DI suite. That way, the client is assured that the look on the digital projection matches the color and density of the prints. Having a lab in the same facility is an added bonus.

Superlux Chasing Tigers
Following seven years of research and interviews, “Chasing Tigers,” a WWII documentary on the men and women of the 14th Air Force in the China-Burma-India theater, is now in post-production. Directed by Loren Falls of Superlux, the one-hour film is a personal story about her father’s wartime missions in the lesser-known China-Burma-India theater of WWII. “Chasing Tigers,” was shot by Pete Wages and edited by Jay Bellissimo.

Falls embraced her father’s squadron mates to learn the dangers and difficulties they faced in the remote CBI theater. From 1943 until the end of the war, the 14th battled an entrenched enemy, a politicized command structure and the Himalayas Mountains, forming impressions and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Other key talent on the film includes: Mark Falls, creative director; Rob Fearon, compositor/motion designer, and; Eric Carros, motion designer.

Each year, the Georgia Film, Video and Music office hosts the “Perfect Pitch” competition, leading to an opportunity that gives local screenwriters the chance to pitch their scripts to Hollywood executives. The Plaster Man was chosen out of more than 40 applicants by a panel of industry judges in June at the Atlanta Film Festival. The winning writers Andy Rusk and Patrick Franklin are traveling to L.A., where they will pitch their script to Hollywood industry representatives.

Witness Trees
Off and on for over 8 years, Atlantan Sandy Corley and former Atlantan Eric Mofford have been developing the film “Witness Trees.” The title for the film is derived from the visual art installations that Corley has been exhibiting (locally and internationally) since 1993, addressing environmental and historical issues. Production for this IMAX film started in January 2007.

Arborglyphs, or Dendroglyphs, are symbols and information carved on trees that span Pre-Revolutionary War to Trail of Tears to modern boundary markers throughout the Southeast. Trail trees, on the other hand, are utilitarian; saplings were bent and trained to serve as an informational signpost, boundary markers, domestic devices or directional pointers by Indians, travelers, settlers and traders. Corley has been researching, gathering endorsements, shooting still photos and interviewing historians, authors, activists, wilderness magazine publishers, trail trees experts, directors of Indian education programs, Georgia land lottery experts, anthropologists and archeologists about these endangered treasures. Mofford will be directing the film. His most notable current work includes credits as first assistant director of the FOX TV series “24,” and as coordinating producer for the FX series “Black/White.”

The relationship between humans and their environment is the subject of “Witness Tress.” The IMAX experience will document and introduce the phenomenon of the trees and their historical significance in a breathtaking format. The film’s release in conjunction with an active, continuing website will serve as a magnet for further contacts,
information and links to bring forward anyone who has knowledge of additional arborglyphs. This website will continue to serve as an active museum for arborglyphs and trail trees.

Continuing with last year’s aesthetic, the spot featured oversized cutouts of celebrity heads spliced onto tiny bodies as the stars made their way to the SAG Awards ceremony. Set to the SAG tweaked theme of 70’s blaxploitation film “Shaft,” A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, the cast of Lost and many others greeted the paparazzi, acted out scenes from their respective series and cast votes for their peers.

In other news, Primal Screen recently contributed work to The Sundance Film Festival as an Official Provider. This is the third year in a row the Atlanta-based studio was chosen by the Festival to collaborate on various design projects. This year’s work includes two ambient films, which play before every screening, and title packages for the web-based “Live@Sundance,” “Meet The Artist,” and the Short Film Series. Slemp Has Hands On
Atlanta commercial photographer recently completed one of his most rewarding projects. Slemp was hired to create portraits of some of the key volunteers for this year’s Martin Luther King Service Summit, sponsored by Hands on Atlanta. The idea germinated a year ago, during last year’s Summit, when it became apparent that some of the guest speakers read like a “who’s who” of their respective disciplines. Poets, novelists, filmmakers, play-writes, artists and notable musicians lent their voices to make this event one of the premier celebrations of Dr. King’s legacy.

Slemp combined two different approaches in documenting his subjects. First, Slemp used a time-honored technique involving a simple white background to silhouette the subject, and one light on the subject’s face, making for some very dramatic lighting, and helping to distinguish between a “picture” and a “portrait”. He used a combination of old and new techniques to achieve his desired look. First was the “old” technology, using a wooden 4x5 field camera, and then digitizing the resulting negative. The “new” technology involved capturing a set of images with a high-resolution digital camera.

The motivation behind Slemp’s effort was twofold. First, he wanted to honor these generous people who have lent their time, and talent, to the King Service Summit. The second was so that Hands On Atlanta could use the resulting images in promoting future events, and attracting participants of the same caliber for future events.
